Undoubtedly one of the most notable figures in online horror, Jeff the Killer has also been haunted by a series of legal and moral issues. The original image was “borrowed” from an imageboard, and its creator is unknown. The first story associated with the picture was written by a teen with a post history so racist, misogynistic, and “problematic” that even those who rolled their eyes at every one of those buzzwords would nonetheless be surprised by the severity of the post contents. The following reimagining had its own problems, launching the character not only into notoriety, but the halls of “Crappypasta” history.

So where do we stand, now?

The original writer threatens to sue others who use the character – solely because of the name “Jeff” – and there are those who won’t touch the character with a 10 foot butcher knife because if the character’s storied history of drama and cringe.

Attire: The Joykiller is often said to wear all black, including “an edgelord trench coat” over a tee that seems to depict “that one creepy shadow smile from that internet meme, you know the one”.

Description: The Joykiller is a young man estimated to be in his late teens or early 20s. Described as “tall and wiry” by those who have seen him and lived to tell the tale, Joykiller is a predator of stealth and convenience, rather than brute force. Having seemingly adopted the persona of what’s best described as “an outlandish movie villain”, Joykiller often speaks of himself in the third person and generally acts in an over-dramatic and edgy way, sometimes referring to himself as “The Angel of Death” or “Judgement Come Calling”, among other overstated and self-aggrandizing titles. Joykiller is rumored to be the perpetrator of a “teenaged revenge spree” against his family, teachers, and schoolmates, however any evidence connecting him to these past crimes is scant at best. Still, he is said to enjoy “confessing” to this and other evil deeds, which often conflict and cancel each other out, meaning he is likely “just fucking with you”. The more random, outlandish, and ridiculous the “origin story”, the more serious he behaves while telling it, presumably as a method of toying with victims through sheer confusion. His face is said to be a pale white mockery of a human visage, looking as if it’s been destroyed and “re-molded” wrong, like crusty clay or half-baked dough.

Methods: The Joykiller is fond of suffocating his victims with a pillow as they sleep, or as they are about to fall asleep, during which time he often stabs them repeatedly through said pillow as it muffles their screams and calls for help. He appears to show no preference for a specific type of victim, and will kill indiscriminately.

As you can see, the above character draws inspiration from the original image (which had the filename “JOY.jpg”, hence the new name) as well as the following mythos – without using anything explicitly created by a previous internet user. This effectively gives us a transformative character that, with tongue firmly planted in cheek, satirizes what has come before, itself a “living commentary” on previous works.
